The original name of Thakurgaon was Nishchintapur. As soon as the name 'Nishchintapur' is uttered, a picture of a village or town suitable for living in peace comes to mind. The story of the village 'Nishchindipur' in the Panchali novel Pather of Bibhutibhushan falls on Kingbaman. But I never remember the northern town of Thakurgaon. Because the name Nishchintapur of Thakurgaon has been suppressed for a long time. Thakurgaon was shifted to Nishchintopur, the favorite town of the common people, to fulfill the greedy desires of a few wealthy people. And when the word Nishchintpur is uttered because this history is unknown, it never seems to be Thakurgaon. However, people who are aware of history still think of Nishchintapur with Thakurgaon in their hearts full of emotion. It is believed that Thakurgaon was probably known as Nishchintpur at one time as the name of the mouza was rumored. But as we have seen a map recently, it has been proved beyond any doubt that the original name of Thakurgaon was 'Nishchintapur'. Thakurgaon and Nishchintapur are two separate places in the 16th century map of Kochbihar showing the adjoining area. Nishchintopur is shown on the east bank of the Tanganandi and Thakurgaon is shown on the west bank of the Tangan river to the north-west. From this it is clear that Nishchintapur on the eastern bank of the Tangan River was later renamed as Thakurgaon. And through this Inishchintapur was transformed into Thakurgaon. At first the whole subdivision was known as Thakurgaon and later the district Thakurgaon was introduced. What has been found about the history of naming Thakurgaon is that Narayan Chakraborty used to live in a mouza in Akai Union, 8 km north of the present district headquarters. . They were well-known in the area for their wealth and influence. The people there used to call that Chakravarti house Thakurbari. Later the locals started calling this place Thakurgaon from Thakurbari. Chakravarti Babura felt the need to set up a police station here. At their request, the zamindar of Jalpaiguri persuaded the British government to set up a police station there. A police station was established here in the early 1800s. And the name was given to Thakurgaon police station. Later, for various reasons, Thakurgaon police station was shifted to Nishchintpur on the east bank of Tangan river. Thakurgaon subdivision was formed in 180 AD with 10 thanas around this thana. Thakurgaon subdivision was then under 5 police stations of present Panchagarh district. The name of this Thakurgaon with 5 police stations was identified on the map of Bangladesh on February 1, 1984 as a district. Though new as a district, Thakurgaon has a long history as a town. |
