Background of Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila

Thakurgaon Sadar is an upazila under Thakurgaon district of Bangladesh. Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila, a quiet northern town witnessing ancient history, consists of a municipality and 22 unions.

The place was named Thakurgaon because of the large number of Thakurs - i.e. Brahmins. It was declared a subdivision in 1860. The original name of Thakurgaon was Nishintpur. As soon as the name is uttered, the image of a town fit for a peaceful life floats before the eyes.

About the history of the naming of Thakurgaon, two brothers named Narayan Chakraborty and Satish Chakraborty lived in a mauza of Akcha Union, 8 km north of where the district office-court is located today. They were very famous for their wealth and influence and prestige. People there used to call Chakraborty house as Thakurbari. Later local people started calling this place as 'Thakurgaon' from Thakurbari.
